在经济中并没有什么的价值是恒定不变的，但是黄金购买力的稳定性是不可比拟的。不仅在金本位时代，黄金表现出了其保值的特性，即使是后金本位时代，黄金的购买力在短期虽然表现得比较起伏，但仍称得上相当稳健。
黄金因为它的稀有性和化学性质的稳定性自古以来就倍受人类青睐。有一种常见的分析认为在全球金融市场中黄金是保值的。虽然黄金被认为拥有天然的保值属性，而且没有任何一种货币可以与之相比，但现实是：在经济学中并没有什么是完全保值的。在任何市场中，所有的物品、资产、货币等等都会因各自的供需关系变化而导致相对价值的持续变化。
