Pemimpin Tertinggi Iran Ali Khamenei telah memerintahkan serangan langsung terhadap Israel atas pembunuhan kepala Hamas Ismail Haniyeh, menurut New York Times pada hari Rabu.

Pemerintah Iran dan Hamas menyalahkan Israel atas serangan yang menewaskan Haniyeh. Para pejabat mengatakan Khamenei memerintahkan komandan Korps Garda Revolusi Islam dan Angkatan Darat Iran untuk menyiapkan rencana serangan dan pertahanan "jika perang meluas dan Israel atau Amerika Serikat menyerang Iran."
