一个村庄来了一个奇特的老人，他点燃了一把火，并且用一根棍子在碗里不停地搅拌，竟然从碗中掉出金块来，老人说这就是炼金术。村长请求老人告诉他们秘诀。老人答应了，说：“不过在炼金的过程中，千万不可以想树上的猴子，否则就炼不出金块来。”等老人走了以后，村长就开始炼金，他一直告诉自己，不可想树上的猴子，可是越不想，偏偏猴子越是不断浮现在他的脑海中。他只好交给另一个人，并一再叮咛不可想树上的猴子。就这样，全村的人都试过了，却没有一人能炼出金子，因为树上的猴子，总是会从他们心中跑出来。
