趋势的含义：在顺势而为中，“势”所体现的“趋势”，是一个基本概念，它是趋势分析的起点。从一般意义上讲，趋势就是市场的运行方向。为了便于实际应用，我们将趋势进行具体界定。通常情况下，市场的运行都非直来直去的，而是曲折蜿蜒的，由无数个波峰和波浪组成。上升趋势体现为一系列一次上升的峰和谷上；下降趋势则以依次下降的峰和谷为特征；横向延伸趋势体现为一系列一次横向伸展的峰和谷上。
趋势通常还划分为三种类型，即短期趋势、中期和长期趋势。长期趋势是期货市场的主要趋势，反映期货价格波动的主要方向，通常持续时间较长；中期趋势是市场的次要趋势，反映主要趋势的调整状况，持续时间通常短于长期趋势；短期趋势是市场的短暂趋势，反映价格的短暂波动，通常持续时间较短。实际在市场上，既有覆盖几分钟或几小时的非常短暂的趋势，也有延续一年、数年乃至几十年的长期趋势，它们同时共存、共同作用。
