《孙子兵法》对这种思维模式推崇备至，“昔之善战者，先为不可胜，以待敌之可胜。不可胜在己，可胜在敌”。
也即，面对错综复杂的现实，首先反向考虑各种危险因素，通过种种控制措施，首先让自己立于不败之地，然后再考虑如何胜利的事情，而且胜利主要看敌人是否给你机会。
