那么多王家俊彦，当然是名门望族的择婿热点。一天，一个叫郗鉴的太尉，派了门生来选女婿。太尉有一个叫郗璿的女儿，才貌双全，已到了婚嫁的年龄。门生到了王家的东厢房，那些青年都在，也都知道这位门生的来历，便都整理衣帽，笑容相迎。只有在东边的床上的一个青年，裸露着肚子在吃东西，完全没有在乎太尉的这位门生。门生回去后向太尉一描述，太尉说：“就是他了！”
于是，这个袒腹青年就成了太尉的女婿，而“东床”，则成了此后中国文化对女婿的美称。
这个袒腹青年就是王羲之。
