Today's News Update - 4th Feb 2025 Asia Asia-Pacific markets fell Monday after U.S. tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China were announced. Australia’s ASX 200 dropped 1.79%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.66%, and South Korea’s Kospi slid 2.52%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dipped 0.3%, while Chinese markets were closed for Lunar New Year. Trade tensions weighed on investor sentiment. US The Dow Jones Industrial Average made a significant recovery on Monday, bouncing back from steep losses earlier in the day after the U.S. and Mexico agreed to pause tariffs for one month. The 30-stock index ended up 24 points, or 0.1%, after having dropped as much as 665.6 points, or 1.5%, earlier. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also pared their losses, closing down 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, the iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (EWW), which tracks Mexican stocks, rebounded to finish 2% higher. Commodity Gold prices hit a record high Monday, rising 0.8% to $2,818.99 per ounce, as U.S. tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico spurred safe-haven demand and inflation concerns. U.S. gold futures also gained 0.8%, settling at $2,857.10. Oil prices eased after the U.S. and Mexico paused tariffs, with Brent crude falling 0.2% to $75.53 a barrel, despite earlier reaching $77.34.
